Manage Acid Reflux in Pregnancy

Many women experience heartburn symptoms when they are pregnant and this happens for several reasons.

One of these is the increase of hormones in the women's body while they are pregnant. Hormonal imbalance results in softening the muscles that keep the Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES) tightly closed. Weak LES muscles lets the gastric acid and food to reflux back into the esophagus and throat.

Other reason for experiencing heartburn is due to the pressure that baby creates more pressure on the woman's stomach. Therefore, the stomach contents are forced right into the esophagus and the throat.

However, there are several methods that a pregnant woman can observe to lessen the discomfort brought by heartburn. The following are good advices, although this may not remove the heartburn totally:

  • Avoid foods spicy foods, citrus fruits and juices, chocolates, mustard seeds, pickles, fatty foods, fried foods, and highly seasoned dishes.
  • Avoid coffee, tea, soft drink alcohol beverages and smoking.
  • Avoid eating large meals. Try to eat 6- 7 smaller meals instead of 3 large meals. While eating chew and breakdown your food properly and have your last meal of the day at least 2 hours before going to bed.
  • Drink atleast 8 to 10 glasses more glasses of water a day.
  • Try to sleep with an elevated head and shoulders through a wedge pillow. Through this, the gravity will work to stop the acids ifrom coming into your esophagus.
  • Don't wear tight fitting clothes.
  • When bending, do it at the knees, not at the waist. Try to sit erect in a relaxing posture.
  • Check with your health provider about heartburn medicines that are safe in pregnancy. An antacid that contains magnesium or calcium may ease discomfort. Avoid antacid brands that are high in sodium or contain aluminum or aspirin.
